AiR 351 is an independent international visual arts residency program located in Cascais, Lisbon region (Portugal), targeted for artists and curators from all over the world. Its studio based professional development program anchors itself on the thriving local art scene and streches over a national and international network. AiR 351´s main purpose is to generate critical mass while furthering artistic projects and exchanges. Aware of the country´s intersection position between Europe, America and Africa, AiR 351 aims to become a space of confluence, dialogue and critical thinking.
AiR 351´s praxis follows a collaborative model based on solid one-to-one relationships within the artworld. Its team works closely with each resident on a supportive environment, anticipating and reacting to its needs. Through institutional partnerships, AiR 351´s activities encompass a variety of contexts such as museums, universities and art schools.
The organization relies on the expertise of an international Strategic Advisory Board, from a diversity of cultural backgrounds and also on the assistance of an external and rotating International Selection Committee. Through a diverse range of initiatives wishes to bring together the local and international art scenes and continuoulsy extending the residency outreach and creating new possibilities for the dissemination of art.
Its main objectives are:
— Enhance research, production and dissemination of contemporary art;
— Contribute to the creation of an international artistic community and the increase of local critical mass;
— Boost artistic careers;
— Reinforce the centrality of the city and the country by consolidating its international reputation in the field of artistic production;
— Reinforce artistic links between Africa, North and South America and Europe;
— Build partnerships with international cultural organizations and promote the sharing of knowledge.
On Spring 2018 AiR 351 welcomed a first series of residents at its entirely renovated premises in Cascais through an Open Call process.
AiR 351 is a non profit generously sponsored by Cascais Municipality, Millenium BCP (Main Sponsor), EDP Foundation and ANA Aeroportos.
The professional development program is directed for artists and curators who can apply by an open call process. An international jury reviews applications and selects candidates with AIR 351.
The program favors the integration of residents in the local cultural community, creates mechanisms to promote networking and seeks to develop opportunities for the production and especially presentation of the work of each resident. In addition to the use of individual studios, residents are invited to use communal spaces such as collective work areas and rooms for public presentations. AiR 351 provides curatorial and production support, organizes studio visits and field tours and develops public activities.
Residencies for artists can last up to 12 months while residencies for curators may be shorter (1 month minimum).
AiR 351´s headquarters are located on a quiet residential neighborhood of tree-lined streets and surrounded by public gardens. On a walking distance from the sea, this unique setting is a fertile environment for artistic research and creation. Only 30 minutes away from Lisbon´s city center (35 kms), it is also at the heart of the arts district in Cascais. In a walking distance, one can find Casa das Histórias Paula Rego designed by the Pritzker Prize architect Eduardo Souto Moura, the historic Cidadela Palace and Fortress, as well as a natural landscape setting.
Studios and offices are housed in a 19th century building, a former public school declared as Classified Heritage (Escola Monumento D. Luiz I). Entirely renovated in the beginning of 2017, the building belongs to the City Hall and it was granted to AiR 351 for this specific purpose.Access:
